> The great wisdom of the Buddha-Dharma shatters all existence. With great Complete Enlightenment, it encompasses all emptiness. With great compassion, it delivers all beings. It begins in non-speaking and extends to having nothing left unsaid; having nothing left unsaid, it returns to non-speaking. Now, the Way is not transmitted without words; yet being transmitted without relying on words, the Way lies beyond words. This is the utmost, supreme vehicle of the Buddha-Dharma, like transmitting fire with firewood: the firewood is exhausted, yet the fire never ends. Therefore, when the Bhagavān held up a flower, Kāśyapa gave a subtle smile. In the instant of a single smile, he transcended all and attained it alone—how, then, could it be sought in words? From Mahākāśyapa, after twenty-eight transmissions, it reached Bodhidharma, who first entered China, resided at Shaolin Temple on Mount Song, and sat facing the wall for nine years. Bodhidharma transmitted it through six generations to \[Hui\]neng. Neng transmitted it through ten generations to Linji. Linji was born in Caozhou and travelled to study in Jiangyou. He served Huangbo and asked about the plain, cardinal meaning of the Buddha-Dharma. Huangbo struck him immediately. He asked three times like this and was struck three times. Taking his leave, he went to Dayu and related the earlier conversation, saying, 'I do not know where my fault lay.' Dayu said, 'Huangbo was so grandmotherly toward you, thoroughly exhausting himself for your sake, and yet you still search for where the fault lies!' At these words, the Master had a great awakening. He returned to Zhenzhou and built a dwelling on the bank of the Hutuo River, which is the present Linji Cloister. Thus he was titled Great Master Linji. In the Way, the Master attained the great culmination. Ascending from Linji up to all Buddhas, and descending from all Buddhas down to Linji, the earlier sages and later sages are without any gap between them. He pointed directly to people, his dynamic function like the release of an arrow; when students heard it, their ears and eyes were completely confounded, leaving them nothing internal or external to rely on. After Neng, Chan divided into five houses; only what the Master transmitted is titled the Orthodox House. In the first transmission it passed to Xinghua Jiang; in the second transmission to Nanyuan Yong; in the third transmission to Fengxue Zhao; in the fourth transmission to Shoushan Nian; and after five more transmissions it reached Wuzu Yan. Yan transmitted it to Tianmu Qi; Qi transmitted it to Lanniu He; He transmitted it to Zhulin Bao; Bao transmitted it to Zhulin An; An transmitted it to Hai Xitang Rong'an; Rong'an transmitted it to Zhonghe Zhang; and Zhang transmitted it to the Great Chan Master Haiyun, the venerable Jian. Haiyun's nature united with the Way, and his mind merged with the Dharma; in minuteness there was nothing he did not enter, and in greatness there was nothing he did not contain. The Master resided at Linji Cloister, capable of continuing the ancestral transmission to rectify the lineage of the Way. Through this, the Buddha-Dharma was truly revived. When
