> The Grand Master, King Zhongwu of Lu, Muqali, was seven feet tall, with a tiger's head, curly whiskers, a dark face, and many stratagems; his heroism and courage were unsurpassed in his era. Together with Bo'orču, Boroqul, and Čila'un, he served Taizu with loyalty and valor; at that time they were called the dörben külüg, which in Chinese means the "Four Heroes." When Taizu was halting at the Iron Gate Pass in East India, the guards saw a beast shaped like a deer, with a horse's tail, green in color, and with a single horn. It could speak human tongue, and said, "Your army should turn back early." The Emperor was astonished and questioned Yelü Chucai (courtesy name Jinqing). He reported, "This beast is named the jiaoduan; it travels 18,000 li a day and understands the tongues of the four barbarians. It is an omen of aversion to killing. Heaven has surely sent it to inform Your Majesty. We pray that you will accord with the mind of Heaven and spare the lives of the people of these several countries; this will truly be boundless blessing for Your Majesty." On that very day an imperial decree was issued to withdraw the army. (The above is from the Brief Records of Meritorious Officials of the Present Dynasty.)
