> (Twenty-fifth \[year of Ren Zong\]) Master of Doctrine Miaowen of Da Baojisi in the capital died. His surname was Sun, and he was a native of Weizhou; Miaowen was his monastic name. At the age of nine, he entered the monastic life. At the age of eighteen, clad in patched robes, he traveled for study, wandering across the terrain of Yun and Shuo and observing the customs of Yan and Zhao. At twenty-one, he received the bhikṣu precepts. Reaching the capital, he relied upon the Venerable Ming and studied the Way of the Perfect and Sudden, blending inconspicuously into the assembly for many years. At thirty-two, at the earnest request of the community, he first donned the red robe and mounted the lion seat, joining the ranks of the transmitters of the lamp. His self-restraint and modesty, his lack of desire for swift fame, and his reluctance to rush forward for prominence were all like this. At forty-eight, he resided at Yunquan in Ji, being diligent, frugal, and measured in expenditure. The elderly cherished his virtue, and the young respected his teachings; therefore, the assembly was harmonious and the temple was well-regulated. After two successive harvests, the granaries had surplus grain, which was used in years of famine to relieve starving people; the people of Ji praised him for this. Shizu heard of his Way and summoned him for an audience, turning to his attendants and saying, 'He is a monk of blessed virtue.' An imperial decree appointed him to reside at Baojisi. At that time, Chan study was gradually waning, while the doctrinal vehicles were growing more flourishing. The two schools of Nature and Characteristics both vied across the realm under the Mahāyāna. Adherents of the Characteristics school were confined to names and numbers and mired in differing paths, obscured by opinions of emotional attachment and deluded about the principle of the Perfect and Sudden. The master alone broadly promoted the Vaipulya and revitalized it with the Perfect School, enabling those clinging rigidly to the written word to wash away emotional defilements and harmoniously penetrate tranquility and illumination. Because of this, great masters competed to board the vehicle of the One Vehicle. When he was over eighty, he grew weary of constant activity, entrusted the temple's affairs to his disciples, and retired to rest, dedicating himself exclusively to the Buddha-mindfulness samādhi. On the \[blank\] day of the \[blank\] month of the sixth year of Yanyou, he died at the age of eighty-three. On the day he announced his end, he instructed his disciples to chant the Buddha's name aloud; he then promptly arose, sat cross-legged, formed the samādhi mudrā, and serenely passed away. A stūpa was erected for him outside Pingzemen.
