> (21, Xinyou) The śramaṇa Yu Fakai was a disciple of Master Lan. He was skilled in the \*Fangguang borejing\* and the \*Lotus Sūtra\*, and was particularly proficient in the art of medicine. Once he came upon a woman in childbirth who was in critical danger. Fakai said, "This is easy to treat." The master of the house slaughtered a sheep intending to sacrifice to the spirits; Fakai had him take the meat to make soup, had the woman drink it, and, relying on her breath, applied an acupuncture needle. In a moment, the sheep's membrane wrapped around the baby and came out. Someone asked, "The Dharma Master is lofty, clear, firm, and simple; why do you keep the medical arts in your mind?" He replied, "To understand the six perfections to dispel the illness of the four demons, and to harmonize the nine pulses to heal illnesses of wind and cold—benefiting oneself and benefiting others, is this not permissible?"
