> (Twenty-eight) In the fifth year of Taichang of the Northern Wei, Minister of the Imperial Household Cui Hao was slandered. The Emperor ordered Hao to retire to his private residence as a duke, whereupon he cultivated the arts of ingesting elixirs and nourishing the inner nature. Earlier, the Daoist master Kou Qianzhi of Mount Song cultivated the arts of Zhang Daoling. He claimed that Laozi had once descended and appeared to him, ordering Qianzhi to succeed Daoling as Celestial Master, bestowing on him the arts of abstaining from grain and lightening the body, as well as twenty fascicles of codes and precepts, instructing him to purify and rectify the Daoist teaching. He also met a divine being, Li Puwen, who said he was Laozi's great-great-grandson, and bestowed upon him over sixty fascicles of esoteric registers and true scriptures, along with revealing the method of the Heavenly Palace's Silent Wheel. Qianzhi presented these books to Emperor Taiwu. Most at court and among the public did not believe them, but Cui Hao alone served him as a master, received his arts from him, and submitted a memorial praising and explaining the matter. Emperor Taiwu was delighted, and sent ceremonial ushers with jade, silk, and sacrificial beasts to sacrifice at Mount Song and welcome Qianzhi. They established a Celestial Master's ritual altar south of Pingcheng with a five-tiered platform. Daoist followers flourished from this point forward.
