> Fifth, Murong De of the Southern Yan personally built Shentong Monastery for Upādhyāya Lang of Qizhou. In his letter to the Master he said: 'Respectfully inquiring after Upādhyāya Lang of Mount Tai. Having encountered many hardships in my family, disasters and misfortunes have repeatedly arrived. Formerly in Jianxi, the royal house fled west, relying on King Wu for the restoration; his divine martiality governed the realm, vastly opening the eastern summer lands, rescuing the territories so that far and near were revived. The world was extremely fortunate. Yet Heaven did not forget disaster: King Wu soon passed away. At the beginning of the Yongkang era, east collapsed and west was shaken, and the capital fled and scattered. Whenever I think of the spiritual palace, I tremble and swallow my tears. Lacking virtue, I was born amid chaotic warfare; with few surviving people left, I succeeded to the heavenly mandate. Fortunately, the Upādhyāya's great benevolence and the spiritual deities have sheltered me. An envoy presents one hundred bolts of silk, and I also temporarily enfeoff you with the two counties of Fenggaoshan and Rencheng in Eastern Qi. The letter cannot exhaust my thoughts; it accords with my mind.' The Master answered all the imperial communications of the five dynasties. Fearing to be tedious, they are not recorded here; see the Tang dynasty's Hongming ji.
