> (18) When the Venerable Buddhayaśas of Tianzhu arrived in Guzang, he heard that Master \[Kumāra\]jīva had accepted palace women of Qin, and sighed: 'Kumārajīva is like fine silk; how could he be made to fall into brambles and thorns?' When \[Kumāra\]jīva heard that Yaśas had come from afar for his sake, he feared they might miss each other and \[Yaśas\] would return, so he urged the king of Qin to welcome him. When the envoy arrived, Yaśas said: 'Since the imperial decree has descended from afar, I ought to ride by courier relay to match the dānapati's diligence in honoring scholars. But if I am to be treated like Kumārajīva, then this poor monk will be north of the Northern Mountains!' The envoy returned, and the king's admiration and anticipation were unceasing; he again sent an envoy to invite him with full courtesies, and only then was Yaśas willing to come. The king welcomed him in the suburbs and established a separate vihāra for him to reside in, providing offerings fit for a king. Yaśas accepted none of them; when the time came, he engaged in alms-gathering (piṇḍapāta) and ate only one meal a day. He was skilled in the \*Vibhāṣā-śāstra\* and had a red beard, so people at the time called him the 'Red-Bearded Vibhāṣā.' Later, he traveled to Mount Kuang and was deeply revered by Master \[Hui\]yuan. He personally carried iron to cast a pagoda atop Zixiao Peak, enshrining the Tathāgata's true relic inside, which survives to this day.
