> (Twenty-first year, bingwu \[406 CE\]) The Venerable Buddhabhadra of Tianzhu arrived in Chang'an from the second year of Yixi. Kumārajīva welcomed him with his shoes on backward, regretting that they had met so late in life. Their discussions frequently provided remedies for understanding. Buddhabhadra asked, 'Your translations do not surpass ordinary expectations, yet you have such high renown; why is that?' Kumārajīva replied, 'Because my years have passed, students falsely adorn my work. Could you merely echo their praise as exalted?' In an unhurried manner, they resolved unresolved meanings, and mutual sincerity and respect grew even greater. The Qin Crown Prince Yao Hong invited him to the Eastern Palace to discuss the Dharma with Kumārajīva. Kumārajīva asked, 'How are dharmas empty?' He replied, 'Many subtle atoms form matter; matter has no intrinsic nature, so matter is empty.' He asked again, 'Since you destroy matter into emptiness by means of subtle atoms, how do you further destroy a single atom?' He replied, 'Because of one atom, many atoms are empty; because of many atoms, one atom is empty.' When the monk Baoyun translated these words, the assembly did not understand their meaning and all said that Buddhabhadra considered the subtle atom to be permanent. They petitioned him to explain further. Buddhabhadra said, 'Dharmas do not arise of themselves; they arise through the conjunction of conditions. Because of one atom, there are many atoms; since an atom has no intrinsic nature, it is therefore empty. How could one say that a single atom is not destroyed?' At that time, the Qin court favored metaphysical cultivation, and several thousand monks frequented the palace precincts. Buddhabhadra alone remained calm and aloof. He once casually told his disciples, 'Yesterday I saw five ships set sail together from Tianzhu; they should arrive in due time.' Furthermore, one of his disciples claimed on his own to have attained the first fruit \[srotāpanna\]. The Monastic Rector Daoheng said, 'The Buddha does not permit one to speak of the dharmas one has attained oneself. And how can this claim of five ships be verified? Your disciple speaks rashly to deceive and confuse, which violates the vinaya; in principle, we cannot reside together.' Buddhabhadra subsequently crossed the river and entered Mount Kuang to meet Master Huiyuan. In their discussions, he did not yield to Huiyuan, and Huiyuan held him in high esteem. Huiyuan sent a letter to Guanzhong to clear him of the false accusations. Later, at the Xie Sikong Monastery in Jiangdu, he translated the sixty-fascicle Avataṃsaka Sūtra. This moved two boys in blue robes to emerge every morning from the courtyard pond; they burned incense and refilled the vases, never leaving the right side of his seat, and in the evening, they would submerge back into the pond, making this a daily routine. When the translation of the scripture was completed, they disappeared without a trace.
