> (Year 5) In this year, Xie Lingyun was executed in the marketplace for plotting rebellion. Earlier, Lingyun was equally famous with Yan Yanzhi; his writing was sweeping, swift, and superior to Yanzhi's, but was inferior in profundity. He inherited the enfeoffment of Marquis of Kangle, lived in Kuaiji, and indulged in pleasures with the recluses Wang Hongzhi and Kong Chunzhi. The commandery governor Meng Yi served the Buddha with meticulous devotion, but was slighted by Lingyun. Lingyun once told Yi: "Attaining the Way requires wise karma. A scholar-literatus will be born in heaven before Lingyun, but will achieve Buddhahood only after Lingyun." Yi deeply resented these words. When Yi entered the court, he repeatedly curtailed and suppressed Lingyun so that he was not summoned for employment.
> Later, Lingyun became the Administrator of Linchuan; in the commandery he was wanton and lawless, and was impeached by the authorities. The Minister of Works sent Zheng Wangsheng, Attendant of Suizhou, to arrest him. Lingyun immediately raised troops, rebelled, and fled, thus having treasonous intentions. Wangsheng pursued and captured him, sending him to the Court of Judicial Review. The Emperor pitied his talent, commuted the death penalty, and exiled him to Guangzhou. Soon after, he rebelled again; an edict ordered his execution in the marketplace. He was forty-nine years old.
