> (25) In this year, Zhu Lingqi of Wu Commandery was returning by ship from Goguryeo when the vessel was blown by the wind to an island. On the island was a mountain, which he climbed on an impulse. After more than ten li, he heard the noon chanting and knew there was a temple. The temple was built of the seven jewels. He saw several monks, all of whom were stone statues. As he was about to return, someone called Lingqi to bow twice and gave him food. The flavor of the food was fragrant and delicious, unlike anything in the mortal world. The person said: "This place is over twenty thousand li from Jinling. Did you ever know the Daoist Beidu?" Lingqi said: "I know him." The person pointed to a bag on the north wall along with a bottle and staff, saying: "These are his alms-bowl utensils. Now take them with you, along with a letter." He also handed him a green bamboo cane, saying: "When you see Beidu, give it to him." He ordered a novice to see Lingqi back to his ship. The novice told Lingqi to place the bamboo cane in the water before him. In three days he reached the Huai River at Shitou, whereupon the bamboo cane was lost. Shortly afterward, Beidu arrived. Receiving the bowl, he laughed heartily and said: "I have not seen this bowl for nearly four thousand years!" He threw it into the clouds and caught it again, then departed. Beidu frequently demonstrated his passing into nirvāṇa, yet afterward roamed the world again. He went once more to the house of Qi Xie, where the three great beings Lü Daohui, Du Tianqi, and Shuiqiu Xi were present. Xie was greatly astonished and bowed twice. Beidu said: "This year will bring great misfortune; do not forget to cultivate wholesome karma. The Daoist Fayilu is of high virtue; you may draw near him to avert calamities." Presently, a monk called to Beidu from above the doorway; looking up and seeing him, Beidu took his leave, and was never seen again afterward.
