> (31) Shao Shuo was originally a native of the kingdom of Kangju. He had a large mouth, ugly eyes, and looked like a madman; children were able to insult and tease him. Frequently, he followed drinkers into taverns and drank heavily. Later, he became a monk named Master Shuo, and was closest to Zhi. In entering and exiting, or pacing in walking meditation, he paid no heed to night or day. When he took a mind to do something, he went wandering through the counties of Yizhou, recounting events with comical jokes, which made people laugh, and through this he exhorted them to goodness; every household welcomed him. When he was about to die, he said to the monk Fajin: "I wish my bones to be left exposed under the pines; however, both feet must wear wooden clogs." Jin agreed. Afterward, he passed away. His corpse was carried and exposed; the next day, when they went to look, its whereabouts was lost. Soon, a person coming from Pi County said: "Yesterday I saw Master Shuo walking in the marketplace wearing one clog, who said: 'Tell Master Jin for me: the young boys tricked me and gave me only a single shoe!'" Astonished, Jin questioned the novice, who replied: "When carrying the corpse, one shoe fell off, and in our haste there was no time to tie it back on."
