> A descendant of the Yellow Emperor. Originally, Emperor Ku's secondary consort Jiandi saw a dark bird drop an egg, took it, and swallowed it, giving birth to Xie (pronounced \*Xie\*). Xie served Tang and Yu as Minister of Education (Situ); having merit in instructing the people, he was enfeoffed with Shang and granted the surname Zi. Xie fathered Zhaoming; Zhaoming fathered Xiangtu; Xiangtu fathered Changruo; Changruo fathered Caoyu; Caoyu fathered Ming; Ming fathered Zhen; Zhen fathered Wei; Wei fathered Bao Ding; Bao Ding fathered Bao Yi; Bao Yi fathered Bao Bing; Bao Bing fathered Zhu Ren; Zhu Ren fathered Zhu Gui; Zhu Gui fathered Tian Yi. This was Cheng Tang. He served as the Xia Regional Chief. The Earl of Ge did not sacrifice and was hostile to food-provisions; Tang first campaigned against him. At that time, Yi Yin was plowing in the fields of Youxin. Tang sent men with gifts to recruit him, who thereupon persuaded Tang of the enterprise of attacking Xia to rescue the people. Tang presented Yi Yin to Jie, but Jie could not employ him. Yi Yin returned again to Tang. Jie's worthy minister Fei Chang also pledged allegiance to Tang. Tang went out and saw nets spread on four sides. Tang removed three sides for them and changed their prayer, saying, "May those wishing to go left go left; may those wishing to go right go right; may those wishing to soar high soar high; may those wishing to drop low drop low; only those who do not heed my decree shall enter my net." When the feudal lords south of the Han River heard this, they said, "Tang's virtue extends even to birds and beasts!" More than forty states submitted to him. Jie was brutal and tyrannical to the ten thousand people. Yi Yin assisted Tang in attacking Jie, and Fei Chang served as charioteer. They fought at Mingtiao (that is, Jiezhou), and Jie's army suffered a crushing defeat. Tang exiled Jie to Nanchao. The feudal lords held a great assembly. Tang stepped down and took the seat of a feudal lord, saying, "All under Heaven may only be occupied by one who possesses the Way, and only such a one may govern it." He yielded three times, and all the feudal lords pushed Tang forward. Thereupon he ascended the throne of the Son of Heaven. Operating under the virtue of Water, he established his capital at Bo (present-day Yanshi County in Henanfu Circuit). He eradicated Jie's wickedness and tyranny, and governed the people with leniency. The people rejoiced, and those near and far submitted to him. He reformed the calendar: before Xia, the month of \*Jian-yin\* was taken as the first month; after Tang transformed the Xia mandate, he took the month of \*Jian-chou\* as the first month. Twelve inches made one foot. The color honored was white; sacrificial beasts used were white; white was used for the emblem. He wore the drought-cap and plain silk garments. He first established two chancellors, employing Yi Yin and Zhonghui in these offices. He composed the music called \*Dahu\*. He had been on the throne for thirteen years when he passed away, at the age of one hundred. The crown prince Tai Ding died early, and the second son Wai Bing was enthroned.
