> The Tenth Patriarch, the Venerable Pārśva: a native of Central India. His original family name was Nansheng. He remained in the womb for sixty years. His father, the elder Xiangcai, gave him up to leave the household. While serving the Ninth Patriarch, he never slept; because his ribs never touched the mat, he was called the Venerable Pārśva ('Ribs'). Carrying on conversion, he arrived in the kingdom of Pāṭaliputra. Resting beneath a tree, he addressed the assembly: 'This ground turns golden; a noble being is about to enter the assembly.' When he finished speaking, the ground turned golden. There was an elder's son, Puṇyayaśas, who joined his palms, stood before him, and spoke a verse: / 'The Master sits on golden ground / And ever proclaims the true meaning. / Turn your light to illumine me, / Causing me to enter samādhi.' / The patriarch then ordained him; having received the complete precepts, he entrusted to him the Tathāgata's Treasury of the Great Dharma Eye with a verse: / 'The true essence is naturally true; / Through the true, principle is spoken of as existing. / Realizing the truly real Dharma, / There is neither practice nor cessation.' / Having entrusted the Dharma, he straightaway displayed miraculous transformations and entered nirvāṇa, transforming into fire and incinerating himself. The fourfold assembly gathered his relics in the folds of their garments, and erected stūpas wherever they went to make offerings to them. This corresponded to the era of King Zhending of Zhou (Zhengzong ji).
