> The Sixteenth Patriarch, the Great Being Rāhulata: A native of Kapilavastu. Traveling to teach and convert, he arrived at the city of Śrāvastī and said to the assembly of disciples: "Here there is a holy one who shall succeed to the Patriarchal seat." Coming to the Jinshui River at a rock cavern, he saw Saṅghanandi seated peacefully in absorption. He waited for him for three weeks (twenty-one days) before he finally arose from absorption. The Patriarch asked, "Is your body in absorption, or is your mind in absorption?" Nandi replied, "Body and mind are both in absorption." The Patriarch asked, "If body and mind are both in absorption, how can there be any entering or leaving?" Nandi replied, "Although there is entering and leaving, the characteristic of absorption is not lost. Know that when gold is in a well, the substance of the gold is ever still." The Patriarch said, "If gold is in a well, or if gold comes out of the well, the gold has neither movement nor stillness; what thing enters or leaves?" Nandi said, "Speaking of the gold's movement or stillness, what thing enters or leaves? Speaking of the gold's entering or leaving, the gold is neither movement nor stillness." The Patriarch said, "If the gold is in the well, what gold is it that comes out? If the gold comes out of the well, what thing remains?" With these questions and answers pressed back and forth, Nandi had a sudden awakening and immediately sought deliverance. The Patriarch lifted a golden bowl with his right hand up to the Brahmā palace and fetched fragrant rice from there. When the great assembly had qualms, he immediately bade Nandi share his seat and eat together with him. The assembly doubted again, suspecting that master and disciple were improperly mixed together without distinction of rank. The Patriarch knew this and said, "That you cannot eat is entirely due to this. The one who shares my seat today is none other than the past Tathāgata Sālarāja, who has manifested his traces in response to beings." Nandi, knowing that the assembly held arrogant views, said, "After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, people lack ultimate faith; right mindfulness is slight and weak, and they do not believe in tathatā, loving only supernormal powers." Having spoken, he extended his right hand gradually into the earth down to the limit of the vajra-wheel, took dew-water from there, and brought it back in a lapis lazuli vessel to the assembly. Seeing this, the great assembly gave rise to reverence and admiration, repented their errors, and made obeisance. Thereupon, the Patriarch bade Saṅghanandi receive the Dharma Eye, presenting a verse: / 'In phenomena there is truly nothing to realise; / Do not grasp, nor do not depart. / Phenomena have neither the mark of being nor non-being; / How could inner and outer arise?' / Having transmitted the Dharma, he sat peacefully and entered extinction. The fourfold assembly built a stupa to entomb his whole body. This was during the time of Emperor Wu of the Former Han (Zhengzong ji).
