> Wu: In the fourth year of Chiwu, Tripiṭaka Master Kang Senghui of the kingdom of Kangju arrived in Wu. He built a thatched hut, set up an image, and practiced the Way. When the people of the state first saw a śramaṇa, they were astonished. The authorities reported this to the throne. Sun Quan said: "Is this the surviving tradition of the Buddhist Way dreamed of by Emperor Ming of the Han?" He issued an edict summoning him to inquire into the matter. Senghui came forward and said: "It has been a thousand years since the great master Tathāgata entered extinction, yet his numinous bones and relics have miraculous responses without limit. Formerly, King Aśoka revered them and built eighty-four thousand stupas; this is his bequeathed teaching." Quan thought he was boasting and said: "If a relic can be obtained, I shall build a stupa for it. If it fails to show proof, the state has its established punishments." Senghui requested a period of seven days, but there was no proof; the time was extended by another seven days, yet still without proof. Quan said: "Hurry and boil him!" Senghui meditated silently: "The Buddha is named True Compassion; how could he fail me?" He requested a further extension of another seven days. At the fifth drum, he heard a resonant clinking sound. Getting up to look inside the vase, light radiated forth in brilliant flashes. At daybreak, he presented it. Quan gathered with his ministers to observe it and sighed: "This is a rare auspicious sign in the world!" Senghui further said: "The awe-inspiring spirit of the relic is such that nothing in all the world can destroy it." Quan ordered strongmen to strike it with a hammer; the anvil was shattered, while its light remained unchanged. Quan thereupon built a stupa for it at Fotuoli in Jianye, and also built a monastery for Senghui to dwell in, bestowing the plaque 'Jianchu' (First Established). This was the beginning of monasteries and stupas in Jiangnan. Senghui was the eldest son of the grand prime minister of the kingdom of Kangju. (Hongming ji)
