> The Bodhisattva of Dunhuang: The śramaṇa of the Yuezhi nation, Zhu Dharmarakṣa (in the Jin language, Fahu), arrived in Luoyang. Fahu's learning thoroughly mastered the doctrines and practices of thirty-six countries, and he was conversant with their affairs. After bringing a large collection of Sanskrit manuscripts of Brahmanical scriptures from India to the Yumen Pass, he resided in Dunhuang. His contemporaries called him the Bodhisattva of Dunhuang. He first translated the Lotus Sūtra, which is known as the Zheng fahua \[jing\] (Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra). Later he travelled to the city of Luoyang and journeyed to the region south of the Yangtze River. During the Yongjia era of Emperor Huai of Jin, he translated sūtras wherever he went, never stopping even briefly. At that time, the upāsaka Nie Chengyuan held the brush to assist in the translations, amounting to nearly four hundred fascicles. When Chengyuan died, his son Daozhen received instructions and transcribed Fahu's dictation. Daozhen himself also translated more than sixty fascicles of sūtras. At that time, the Jin śramaṇas Shi Faju, Fali, and Zhi Mindu, along with the upāsaka Wei Shidu and others, translated numerous scriptures. Ju, Li, and others frequently compared, harmonised, condensed, expanded, noted agreements and differences, and arranged the categories into a total of more than one hundred and forty fascicles. Furthermore, there were the śramaṇas Kālaṛccha (Jianglianglouzhi), An Faqin, Zhu Shulan, Bo Fazu, Zhi Fadu, and others, who each produced various scriptures. Thus, from the Western Jin onward, preaching and translation flourished exceedingly, and the doctrinal characteristics spread widely in this land, for which Fahu possessed extraordinary merit. The scriptures translated by Fahu totalled one hundred and seventy-five works; in the first year of the Jianxing era of Emperor Min of Jin, he laid down his brush and translated no more. Fahu once founded a saṅghārāma in Dunhuang (now Shazhou Route in Gansu Province; the ancient land of shifting sands, within the region of Yongzhou according to the 'Tribute of Yu'), diligently practicing the Way. Qin built the Great Wall no further west than Lintao, so this land did not yet exist \[as Chinese territory\]; the Han made it Dunhuang Commandery. The Yang Pass, the Yumen Pass, and the Wawa River are located there; it was at this riverside that Emperor Wu of Han once obtained a marvellous horse (Tujing).
