> Li Gao, whose courtesy name was Xuansheng. In the bingshen year (the twenty-first year of the Dayuan era of Emperor Wu of Jin), he occupied Guzang (present-day Western Liang Prefecture in Gansu Province). In the gengzi year (the fourth year of the Long'an era of Emperor An of Jin), Gao proclaimed his first year. In the yisi year (the first year of the Yixi era of Emperor An of Jin), Gao, Duke of Western Liang, moved his capital to Jiuquan (present-day Suzhou circuit in Gansu Province). The reign year was called Jianchu. In the bingchen year (the twelfth year of Yixi of Jin), the Liang ruler Xin came to the throne and changed the reign era to Jiaxing. In the first year of Yongchu of Gaozu of Song, the Liang ruler Li Xun had his first year of Yongjian. By the third year of Yongjian, it was destroyed by Northern Liang, lasting a total of twenty-two years. Gao once issued a handwritten order admonishing his sons, considering that those who govern should be cautious with rewards and punishments and not indulge personal loves and hates; keep close to the loyal and upright and distance the flatterers and sycophants; not let attendants secretly manipulate majesty and blessing. When slander and praise arrive, one must examine their truth and falsehood. In hearing litigations and deciding cases, one must maintain an amicable countenance and rely on reason, being careful not to suspect deception or calculate unfairly, and not lightly regard sensual indulgence. One must broadly consult others and not act solely on one's own authority. 'I have been in office for five years, and although I have not yet been able to bring rest to the people, I have concealed disgrace and covered up flaws. Those who were enemies in the morning were entrusted with my core confidence by evening, and in general I have not failed either newcomers or old associates. I have handled matters with impartiality, open and without prejudice, never harboring intentions of personal gain or loss. If one calculates for the short term, it may seem insufficient, but when measured over the long run, there will be more than enough. In this way, I hope not to be ashamed before our predecessors.'
