> Nanyue. The Chan master's taboo name was Huairang, a son of the Du family of Jinzhou. At the age of fifteen he took leave of his parents and went to Yuquan Monastery in Jingzhou, leaving home under Vinaya Master Hongjing. He received full ordination and studied the vinaya. He went to Caoxi to visit the Sixth Patriarch, and after eight years he grasped the essentials of the Dharma. The Patriarch said to the master, "The twenty-seventh Indian patriarch, Prajñātāra, prophesied that from under your feet will emerge a colt that will trample everyone under heaven to death." The master attended upon the Patriarch for fifteen years. In the first year of Ruizong's Xiantian era, he went to Mount Heng and resided at Bore Monastery. Reaching this point, in the midst of the Kaiyuan era, he received Mazu Daoyi and transmitted this gāthā to him:
> "The mind-ground contains all kinds of seeds;
> When they meet moisture, all of them sprout.
> The flower of samādhi is signless;
> What is destroyed, and what is brought to fruition?"
> On the eleventh day of the eighth month of the third year of Tianbao, he passed into complete quiescence on Mount Heng at the age of sixty-eight. An imperial decree bestowed the posthumous title Chan Master Dahui, and his stūpa was named Most Victorious Wheel Stūpa. The master was a dharma heir of the Sixth Patriarch. (In the third year of Tianbao, the designation "nian" \[for year\] was changed to "zai"; in the first year of Suzong's Qianyuan era, it was once again called "nian").
