> Guoyi: In the twelfth month of the eighth year of Zhenyuan, a renshen year, Chan Master Guoyi entered quiescence. The master's taboo name was Daoqin, a son of the Zhu clan of Kunshan in Suzhou. Initially he studied Confucianism. At age twenty-eight he met Chan Master Su of Helin in Runzhou, who encouraged him to shave his head, and instructed him, saying, 'Follow the stream, and when you meet Path (Jing), stop.' The master then journeyed south. In the third year of Tianbao of Xuanzong, he reached a mountain northeast of Lin'an. A woodcutter said, 'This is Mount Jing.' Thereupon he lodged his staff there. The mountain had a Dragon Pool; the dragon king first transformed into a human and offered his land to the master, and it thus became a saṅghārāma (this is Mount Jing Chan Monastery in Yuhang County, Hangzhou Route, Western Zhe Circuit today, the foremost of the Ten Monasteries of the Chan school). A monk asked, 'What is the Way?' The master said, 'On top of the mountain there is a carp; at the bottom of the well there is dust.' Duke Cui of Zhao asked, 'May this disciple now leave the household?' The master said, 'Leaving the household is an affair for great heroes, not something that generals and ministers can accomplish.' The Duke had an awakening. In the third year of Dali of Daizong, he was summoned to the imperial palace. The emperor personally paid reverence to him. The emperor said to National Preceptor Zhong, 'We wish to confer a name upon Master Qin.' The National Preceptor gladly received the command, and he was thus conferred the title Chan Master Guoyi ('First of the Realm'). Later he took his leave and returned to Mount Jing. Reaching this twelfth month, he manifested illness, expounded the Dharma, and passed away. The emperor posthumously conferred the title Chan Master Dajue ('Great Awakening'). The master was the dharma heir of Helin Su; Su was the dharma heir of Chan Master Wei of Mount Niutou in Jiankang; Wei was the heir of Niutou Chi; Chi was the heir of Niutou Fang; Fang was the heir of Niutou Yan; Yan was the heir of Niutou Rong; Rong was the heir of the Fourth Patriarch; this was a collateral branch of the Fourth Patriarch (Chuandeng lu).
