> In the nineteenth year of Zhenyuan, a guiwei year, Great Master Ninggong of Shengshan Monastery in the Eastern Capital showed quiescence. Bai Letian (Bai Juyi) of the Hanlin Academy composed 'Eight Gradual Verses' to mourn him. His preface said, 'Juyi once sought the essentials of mind from the Master. The Master bestowed instruction upon him, saying: "Observation, awakening, concentration, wisdom, clarity, penetration, rescue, renunciation." Thereupon it entered my ears and penetrated my mind, and I had an attainment. Now that the Master has passed away, I have composed verses on these eight characters to mourn him' (the eight verses remain in the Chuandeng lu).
