> In the renyin year, the second year of Changqing, in the third month, the emperor dispatched Lingfu, Registrar of Monks of the Left Precinct, to carry an edict summoning Chan Master Wuye of Fenzhou to court. When Lingfu arrived and proclaimed the edict, he bowed his head and said, 'The lord's gracious command this time is exceptional. May the Master rise and proceed.' The master smiled and said, 'What virtue has this poor monk to repeatedly trouble the lord of men? You may go first, and I will depart presently.' He then bathed, spread his seat, and told his disciples Huiyin and others: 'Your nature of seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing is of equal lifespan with great emptiness. All realms are inherently empty and tranquil. Those who are deluded do not understand and are captivated by realms; once captivated by realms, they transmute endlessly. Constantly understand that all is empty and not a single phenomenon confronts the mind—this is the locus of the application of mind by all Buddhas.' Having spoken, he sat upright and passed away at midnight. Lingfu returned and reported this matter to the throne. The emperor admired and sighed over him for a long time, bestowing the posthumous title National Preceptor Dada. The master was revered by both courts of Xianzong, and thrice summoned, he never went. The master was a son of the Du family of Shangzhou (present-day Yongzhou territory of the Anxi Circuit in Shaanxi). He was a dharma heir of Mazu (Transmission of the Lamp).
