> Duke Wen of Lu, Yanbo, governed the Wei administration as Chancellor-Envoy (called the Northern Capital, modern Daming Circuit). Chan Master Wenhui was named Chongyuan, and he resided at Tianbo Temple. One day he came to bid farewell. The Duke said: 'You are old, Master; where else will you go?' The Master said: 'I am going into extinction.' The Duke said to his son Youfu: 'Master Yuan's demeanor in the Way is deeply settled, and his words and laughter have profound savor; he is no ordinary monk. Go and check on him.' Indeed, he had already passed away while seated. In the height of summer, a fragrant breeze brushed against people. When he was cremated, the smoke was pure white, leaving countless relics (śarīra). Holding a white lapis lazuli vase bestowed by the Emperor, the Duke prayed: 'May I obtain relics?' The smoke immediately entered the vase, filling it with relics. The Duke believed and revered him all the more, and paid careful attention to the internal scriptures. The Master was born to the Sun family of Qiancheng in Qingzhou. At seventeen he went forth from household life; upon reaching twenty he was fully ordained. Traveling on pilgrimage, he came to the dharma seat of Tianyi and suddenly awakened to the profound intent. Tianyi said: 'This is the thousand-li steed of our house.' The Master changed his residence among renowned monasteries four times; monks and laity everywhere looked up to him with admiration. He was the dharma heir of Chan Master Tianyi Huai (\*Chuandeng lu\*).
