> The Chan master was named Daozhen, with the courtesy name Boxiang. He was born to the Dai clan of Gutian in Fuzhou. From his youth, he did not eat meat. At the age of fourteen, he left home at the Shangsheng Cloister. After six more years, he became a fully ordained monk. Reading the scriptures and treatises of the Greater and Lesser \[Vehicles\], he put them aside and said: 'These are merely expedient teachings.' Thereupon, holding a single bowl, he traveled through the Jiang and Huai regions, visiting spiritual friends everywhere. He attained the principle under Chan Master Yuan of Jingshan. Traveling to the capital, he paid respects to Chan Master Dajue Lian at Jingyin. Lian had him serve as head monk among the assembly beneath his seat. When Master Lian returned to Wu, the assembly requested the master to succeed him in dwelling at Jingyin. On the day he opened the hall, Emperor Yingzong sent an imperial commissioner to offer incense and bestowed a purple square robe and an honorific title. The capital and the four quarters offered congratulations. Reaching the seventeenth day of the eighth month in the eighth year of Yuanyou under Emperor Zhezong, he bathed, changed his robes, spoke a verse, sat cross-legged, and transformed \[in death\]. His age was eighty; his monastic age was sixty-one. The master was a Dharma heir of Chan Master Fayuan of Fushan. Yuan was the heir of Sheng of Yexian; Sheng was the heir of Nian of Shoushan; Nian was the heir of Zhao of Fengxue; Zhao was the heir of Yong of Nanruan; Yong was the heir of Jiang of Xinghua; Jiang was the heir of Chan Master Xuan of Linji (Dongdu shilüe and Sengbao zhuan).
