> Chan Master Huaiqin (Fojian) of Zhihai in the capital Bianjing was a native of Shu Prefecture (now Anqing Circuit), born to the Wang family. At an early age, he studied under Yuanshen of Guangjiao Monastery in his native commandery and was ordained upon passing the examination on what he had mastered. He was awakened whenever he contemplated the Buddha's words in the Lotus Sūtra: 'Only this one matter is real; the other two are not true.' Entering the quarters of the Venerable Wuzu Fayan, he thoroughly grasped the essentials of the Dharma and became his heir. Sun Dingchen, the administrator of Shu, invited him to reside at Taiping Monastery, where his Dharma teachings spread widely. Early in the Zhenghe era, an imperial decree appointed him abbot of Zhihai in Bianjing. After five years, he requested permission to return and received imperial authorization to reside at Mount Qiang in Jiankang. Privy Councilor Deng Gong (Zichang) memorialized to grant the Master an honorary title and the purple robe. Coming to the seventh year of the Zhenghe era, on the eighth day of the ninth month, he ascended the hall and said: 'The mind-seal of the ancestral teachers is like the mechanism of an iron ox: moving, it leaves an indelible impression; staying, it shatters the impression. Even if one neither moves nor stays, that is still not the place where a patched-robe monk walks. So, what is the place where a patched-robe monk walks? I will wait until around the tenth month to explain it thoroughly for you all.' When the eighth day of the tenth month arrived, he bathed, changed his clothes, sat upright, penned several farewell letters to old friends, ceased his brush, and passed away. After the cremation (jhāpita), his relic-bones and śarīra were collected and enshrined in a stupa to the left of the monastery. Among those who inherited the Master's Dharma was Shouxun and others. Xun was born to the Shi family of Huzhou, resided at Tianning Monastery on Mount He, and was known as Chan Master Fodeng. In the sixth year of the Shaoxing era, he also entered quiescence on the eighth day of the tenth month. Vice Prefect Layman Shuanghuai (Zheng Ji) and Auxiliary Academician Layman Yangkong (Pan Lianggui) deeply sought instruction and attained enlightenment under him (General Lamp Record).
