A monk from Upper Tianzhu was summoned and asked what scripture he expounded; he answered, 'The Lotus Sūtra.' Next, a monk from Xianlin was asked what scripture he expounded; he memorialized, 'The Treatise on the Hundred Dharmas.' Next, the Master was asked, 'What does Chan take as its principle?' He replied to the throne, 'Chan is pure wisdom, wondrous and complete, its essence fundamentally empty and quiescent; it cannot be known through seeing, hearing, perceiving, or knowing, nor can it be comprehended through thinking and discriminating.' (He fully discussed the fundamental and secondary.) He also said, 'Chan and the Doctrinal Teachings are fundamentally one essence. Chan is the Buddha's mind; the Doctrinal Teachings are the Buddha's words. Through the Buddha's words one sees the Buddha's mind. It is like the hundred rivers with different currents returning together to the sea; once they reach the sea, there is no different taste.' (And so forth.)
