> At that time, the bodhisattva Sumati had fulfilled his practices of merit and virtue. His rank had mounted to the ten stages, and he was an ekajātipratibaddha, proximate to sarvākārajñatā. Born in the Tuṣita Heaven, his name was Śvetaketu. He expounded the practice of an ekajātipratibaddha for the heavenly lords, and also manifested various bodies throughout the lands of the ten directions, expounding the Dharma for sentient beings as was appropriate. As the appointed time was approaching when he should descend to become a Buddha, he then observed five matters: first, he observed whether sentient beings were ripe or not ripe; second, he observed whether the time had arrived or not arrived; third, he observed among all lands which country was in the center; fourth, he observed among all clans which clan was noble and flourishing; fifth, he observed past causes and conditions to see who was most upright and genuine, suitable to be his parents. Having observed these five matters, he then reflected to himself: 'Now all sentient beings have been matured by me ever since I first aroused the thought \[of awakening\]; they are capable of receiving the pure and wondrous Dharma. In this trichiliocosm, this country of Kapilavastu in Jambudvīpa is the most central.' (The Ruiying benqi jing says: 'Kapilavastu is the center of the three thousand suns and moons and the twelve thousand heavens and earths. The awe-inspiring spiritual power of a Buddha is supremely venerable and supremely heavy; he cannot be born in a marginal land, for the earth would tilt and slant. Therefore, he dwells in its center to transform the ten directions comprehensively. When the Buddhas of antiquity arose in the world, they all were born here.') 'Among all clans and castes, the Śākya is foremost, the scion of Ikṣvāku and the descendants of holy kings. Observing the past causes and conditions of King Śuddhodana, husband and wife are upright and genuine, suitable to be my parents.' He also saw that Lady Māyā's lifespan was short: having conceived the crown prince, when ten full months were completed, the crown prince would then be born; seven days after giving birth, his mother's life would end. Having made this observation, he further reflected to himself: 'If I were to descend and take birth right away, I would not be able to broadly benefit the multitudes of devas and humans.' He thereupon manifested five kinds of omens in the heavenly palace to cause the devaputras all to realize that the bodhisattva's appointed time to descend and become a Buddha had arrived: first, the bodhisattva's eyes were seen to blink; second, the flowers upon his head withered; third, his garments caught dust and dirt; fourth, sweat issued from under his armpits; fifth, he took no delight in his original seat. At that time, the heavenly hosts suddenly saw the bodhisattva display these unusual omens. Their hearts were filled with great terror; blood flowed like rain from all the pores of their bodies. They said to one another, 'Before long the bodhisattva will abandon us!' At that time, the bodhisattva also manifested five auspicious portents: first, he emitted a great light that illuminated the trichiliocosm everywhere; second, the great earth moved in eighteen ways, and Mount Sumeru, the waters of the ocean, and all heavenly palaces shook and trembled; third, the palaces and residences of all Māras became hidden and invisible; fourth, the sun, moon, stars, and constellations had no more light; fifth, the eight classes of beings beneath heaven were all shaken and could not contain themselves. When these Tuṣita devas saw the five omens upon the bodhisattva's body and also beheld the five rare events outside, they all gathered and went to the bodhisattva's abode. Bowing their heads and faces to his feet, they addressed him, saying, 'Venerable One, today we have seen these various omens; our whole bodies tremble and we cannot settle ourselves. We pray only that you will explain these causes and conditions for us.' The bodhisattva then replied to the devas, saying: 'Good sons, you should know that all conditioned things are impermanent. Before long I will abandon this heavenly palace and be born in Jambudvīpa.' At that time, having heard these words, the devas wept and wailed, their hearts filled with great distress, and blood appeared over their entire bodies like the flowers of the palāśa tree. Some no longer took delight in their original seats; some cast away their adornments; some tossed and turned, swooning on the ground; some deeply sighed over the suffering of impermanence. At that time, a devaputra spoke a verse, saying:
