> At that time, when the World-Honoured One had finished pronouncing the benediction, he took the food and returned alone beneath the tree. Having finished eating, he thought to himself that he needed water. Śakra Devānām Indra immediately knew the Buddha's thought. Just as a strong man bends or stretches his arm, he descended from the heavens to the presence of the Buddha, bowed his head to his feet, and then pointed his finger at the earth to create a pond. Its water was pure and cool, endowed with the eight good qualities. The Tathāgata then made use of it. After he had washed and rinsed, he preached various dharmas for Śakra Devānām Indra. Having heard the Dharma, Śakra Devānām Indra leaped for joy, suddenly vanished, and returned to his heavenly palace. At that time, after the midday meal, Kāśyapa was walking about in the woods and thought to himself, “The young śramaṇa received food today and returned beneath the tree. I should go there and see him.” He went to where the Buddha was, and suddenly saw a large pond beside the tree, its spring water limpid and pure, endowed with the eight good qualities. Astonished, he asked the Buddha, “Why is there suddenly this pond here?” The Buddha replied, “This morning I received your offering and returned here to eat. Having eaten, I needed water to wash, rinse, and clean my bowl. Śakra Devānām Indra knew my thought, came down from the heavens, and created this pond by pointing his finger at the earth.” At that time, having seen the water of the pond and heard the Buddha's words, Kāśyapa reflected to himself, “The young śramaṇa has great majesty and virtue to be able to act like this and evoke heavenly wonders, yet he is still not as true as my path.”
