> Only then did the king, his multitude of ministers, and the myriad citizens of the country realize that Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa was a disciple of the Buddha. They then entered the forest, and from afar they saw the Tathāgata, adorned with the major and minor marks. They also saw Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa, his two brothers, and their disciples, surrounding him before and behind, like the full moon in the midst of myriad stars. The king walked forward, leaping with joy and unable to contain himself. Having arrived at the Buddha's presence, he bowed his head to the Buddha's feet and addressed the Buddha, saying: "I am the king of Magadha, of the Lunar Dynasty, named Bimbisāra. Does the World-Honoured One know me?" The Buddha answered: "Excellent, Great King!" Thereupon King Bimbisāra sat down to one side. The brahmins, ministers, and the multitude of common people all sat down as well. At that time, seeing that the assembled crowd had all sat down, the World-Honoured One comforted King Bimbisāra with a brahma-voice, saying: "Great King, are your four great elements ever at peace? Is the governance of state affairs not too wearisome?" The king answered: "Owing to the World-Honoured One's grace, I am fortunate to be at peace." At that time, King Bimbisāra and the rest of the great assembly—brahmins, elders, householders, ministers, and common people—seeing that Kāśyapa had become a disciple of the Buddha, said to one another: "Ah, the Tathāgata possesses great spiritual power, and his wisdom is deep, far-reaching, and inconceivable, to be able to subdue a person such as this and make him a disciple!" At that time, there were other people among the crowd who thought to themselves: "Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa possesses great wisdom and is universally revered and trusted by the people of the world. How could he have become a disciple to the śramaṇa Gautama?" They harbored doubts in their minds. At that time, the World-Honoured One, knowing their thoughts, said to Kāśyapa: "You should now manifest spiritual transformations." Thereupon Kāśyapa ascended into the air: from the upper half of his body water emerged, and from the lower half fire emerged; from the upper half fire emerged, and from the lower half water emerged. At times he manifested a vast body filling the air, and at times he manifested a small one; or he multiplied his single body into measureless bodies; or he sank into the earth and sprang forth again. He walked, stood, sat, and lay down in the air. When the entire assembly saw this, they marveled at what they had never seen before, all acclaiming him as the foremost great ṛṣi. At that time, having manifested these transformations, Kāśyapa descended from the air to the Buddha's presence, bowed his head to his feet, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "The World-Honoured One is truly the teacher of gods and humans! I am truly the disciple of the World-Honoured One!" He said this three times. The Buddha then answered: "So it is, so it is, Kāśyapa. What benefit did you find in my Dharma that led you to abandon your fire-tending implements and go forth from home?" Thereupon Kāśyapa replied in verse:
