> At that time, in the country of Magadha, there was an elder named Kalandaka. Seeing that the Buddha had entered the country and was revered by gods and humans, yet had no monastery, \[he thought:\] "I have a fine grove and wish to offer it to the Buddha." He went to the Buddha's presence, bowed at his feet, came forward, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "The Buddha pities all beings like beloved children, renouncing the position of a wheel-turning king without longing for worldly glory. Now you have no monastery, and I have a bamboo grove not far from the city. I wish to offer it to the Buddha, so that it may be made into a monastery." The Buddha accepted it and gave a blessing. The Buddha and the holy assembly resided therein; therefore, it was called Kalandaka's Bamboo Grove. After the king returned to the city, he immediately commanded his ministers: "Now construct halls and chambers in the Bamboo Grove, decorating them with various adornments to make them exceedingly magnificent. Hang silk banners and canopies, scatter flowers, and burn incense." When all was prepared, the king had his carriage readied and went to the Buddha's presence. He bowed his head to his feet and addressed the Buddha, saying: "The Bamboo Grove saṅghārāma has just been completed. I only pray that the World-Honoured One and the bhikṣu-saṅgha, out of pity for me, will go and dwell there." At that time, the World-Honoured One, surrounded before and behind by the bhikṣus and immeasurable gods, entered the city of Rājagṛha. When the Tathāgata stepped upon the city threshold, the musical instruments in the city sounded on their own without being struck; the narrow gates became wider, and the low lintels became higher; all mounds and ruins were flattened; foul odors and dust naturally became fragrant and pure; the deaf heard, the mute spoke, the blind saw, the insane became sane, and the crippled and sick were all cured; withered trees blossomed, rotting grasses flourished, dried pools filled with ripples, and fragrant winds blew gently. Phoenixes, sparrows, peacocks, kingfishers, wild ducks, geese, and mandarin ducks—myriad birds of various kinds—flocked together in flight, uttering harmonious and elegant sounds. There were various auspicious omens such as these. Having entered the city, the Buddha proceeded together with King Bimbisāra to the Bamboo Grove. At that time, the gods filled the air. The king then held a precious vase filled with fragrant water in his hands, and in the presence of the Tathāgata said: "I now offer this Bamboo Grove to the Tathāgata and the bhikṣu-saṅgha. May you take pity on me and accept it." Having spoken these words, he made the donation. At that time, the World-Honoured One accepted it in silence and uttered a verse of blessing:
