If one eliminates the conception of a self, one is also free from what belongs to the self. Whatever I have practiced and studied since the past has all been wrong views; only what I have attained today is the true, correct path.' Having had this thought, he bowed to Aśvajit's feet and returned to his dwelling. Then Aśvajit went forward to finish begging for alms and returned to the Bamboo Grove. Śāriputra returned to his residence. Hearing this, Maudgalyāyana rejoiced boundlessly and praised him: 'Excellent! Please tell me at once.' Śāriputra said: 'Just now, as I was walking out, I met a bhikṣu carrying his robes and bowl, entering a village to beg for alms. His faculties were serene and calm, and his deportment dignified and measured. Seeing him, I gave rise to profound respect. Approaching him, I asked: "It seems to me that you must be newly ordained, yet you can restrain your faculties like this. I wish to ask a question, and I pray you will answer me: What is the name of your great master? What does he teach and admonish, and what Dharma does he expound?" At that time, Aśvajit calmly answered me, saying: "My great master has attained sarvākārajñatā; he is of the Ikṣvāku clan and is the teacher of gods and humans. In marks, wisdom, and supernormal powers, no one is his equal. As I am young and newly practicing the path, how could I fully expound the wondrous Dharma of the Tathāgata?
