> The Dīrghāgama says: In the time of Krakucchanda Buddha, human lifespan was forty thousand years; in the time of Kanakamuni Buddha, human lifespan was thirty thousand years; in the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, human lifespan was twenty thousand years. Now it is said that King Śākyarāja lived for five million years. Supposing this were in Krakucchanda's era, compared with the lifespan of the common people, it exceeds it by over a hundredfold. Testing it by standard cases, it seems anomalous. Yet karmic retributions of all kinds are not easy to conceive. By the time Śākyamuni Buddha appeared in the world, human lifespan in Jambudvīpa was one hundred years, and only in Uttarakuru was lifespan one thousand years.
