釋迦譜 1.68

- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.68](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2040.1.68)

釋義齊言能。瑞應本起亦云。釋迦為能其解。是同此四子。並因能命氏也。在直樹林故名釋。胡語呼直亦云釋。天竺一音兼數義。類多如此。懿摩王即釋種先也。

> The meaning of Śākya is translated in Qi \[Chinese\] as 'able' (neng). The Ruiying benqi jing also says: 'Śākya is interpreted as able.' It is identical to this. These four sons all took their clan name on account of being able. Because they lived in a forest of straight trees (śāka), they were therefore called Śākya; in the Central Asian languages, 'straight' is also called śāka. In India, a single sound often encompasses several meanings; this is commonly the case. King Ikṣvāku was thus the ancestor of the Śākya clan.
