> "Give thirty-six caskets of relics to us to erect Buddha stupas." The king used an expedient means: for kingdoms with fewer people, he caused them to be shared with them so as to make up the required number of households and erect stupas. At that time in Pāṭaliputra there was an elder named Yaśas. The king went to his place and said to the elder, "I wish to erect eighty-four thousand Buddha stupas throughout this Jambudvīpa in a single day. Such is my wish." The elder said, "Excellent! Let the Great King fix the time of a lunar eclipse on the fifteenth day, and have the stupas of the Buddha erected across this Jambudvīpa." In this manner, eighty-four thousand stupas were erected in a single day. The people of the world rejoiced boundlessly and collectively called him Dharmāśoka.
