> The Lalitavistara states: When the queen was about to give birth, she rode a chariot of mica, strolled to a lianbi tree, and sat on a lion seat. The three thousand lands shook in six ways. The Four Heavenly Kings drew the carriage, and the Brahmā king led the way. The tree bent its branch for her. The sūtra states: The ten months being complete, on the eighth day of the fourth month at sunrise, under the aśoka tree, where flowers and leaves were lush, she raised her right hand intending to pull and pick them. The Bodhisattva gradually emerged from her right side. The Buddhacarita states: “In ancient times, kings were born—some from the thigh, some from the hand, some from the crown of the head, and some from the armpit. I was born from the right side.” The Da shanquan jing states: The Bodhisattva wished to attain buddhahood all at once without going through the womb; however, to guard against people’s doubts—fearing they would suspect it was a magical creation and thus not receive the Dharma—he manifested receiving birth from a womb. What was manifested throughout the sūtra was all to eliminate doubt and generate faith. The text is extensive and is not recorded here. (Now, taking the entry into the womb to be on the eighth day of the fourth month, and the birth also on the eighth day of this month, then he was in the womb for twelve months.)
