> The Benqi jing says: The tree spirit considered that the Buddha had attained the Way for seven days without anyone presenting offerings. There were five hundred merchants passing by the mountainside whose carts and oxen all stumbled. There were two leaders, Trapuṣa and Bhallika, who together with the multitude saw the signs and went to the spirit to seek blessing. That spirit appeared in person and explained the intention fully. They then mixed parched flour and honey and went to the tree to present it to the Buddha. At that time, the Tathāgata thought that all buddhas receive food with a bowl. Then the Four Heavenly Kings went to Mount Pāṣāṇa, where from the natural stone four large bowls emerged; each of the Four Kings took one and presented it to the Buddha. He accepted them all, stacking them in his left hand, and pressed them with his right hand, making the four rims vast and bright. Having pronounced blessings, he accepted the parched flour and ate it, rinsed his mouth, and washed the bowl. They then received the three refuges, whereupon he parted from them. The Vinaya adds that he gave them hair and nails to erect a stūpa (the stūpa remains visible today).
