> The Adbhutadharmaparyāya states: The Buddha sent Maudgalyāyana to his native city to inquire after his father and mother, his three uncles, and Yaśodharā, telling them to cut off affection and give up the child; having attained the holy path, he would return to liberate his mother and sever the root of life and death, following the Buddha's words. His father and mother also ordered fifty noble clans, each to give up one son to accompany Rāhula. He was nine years old at the time. The Buddha ordered Ānanda to shave their hair, and together with the fifty others, they left home at the same time. Śāriputra served as upādhyāya, and Maudgalyāyana as ācārya, conferring the ten precepts upon them. Due to his teaching regarding caṇḍālas and others—that those devoid of practice who consume offerings would afterward suffer karmic retribution—he wished to abandon the path. When the Buddha expounded the Dharma to him once more, his mind was opened and his thought was liberated. The Lalitavistara states: The Buddha returned to the palace. Gopā brought Rāhula to bow with his head to the ground. At that time the king and ministers harbored doubts: "The Buddha has been gone from home for twelve years; whence could this son have come?" The Buddha said, "This is my son, born transformationally because of me; do not blame Gopā." The Mahīśāsaka\[-vinaya\] states: The Buddha himself brought Rāhula back and ordered Śāriputra to ordain him. When the king heard this, he was grieved that the royal lineage was cut off forever, and requested that the monks be ordered never to ordain people heedlessly.
