> The Dīrghāgama states: King Prasenajit sought a marriage alliance with the Śākyas, but they gave him a slave girl as his wife. She was installed as queen mother and gave birth to a son, Viḍūḍabha. (A sūtra states: When he first married her, the Śākyas squabbled over it.) When he was eight years old, he went to his maternal grandparents' home to learn archery. At that time, a new hall had been constructed, intended to invite the Buddha and the Saṅgha for the first offering. Viḍūḍabha rashly ascended the lion seat. The Śākyas seized his arms and drove him out. Resentful and lamenting, Viḍūḍabha said to his attendants, "Wait until I succeed to the throne, and I will avenge this matter." Later he inherited the royal throne, mobilized his army, and was about to go. Hearing of this, the Buddha went beneath a withered tree. Seeing him, the king paid homage and asked \[why he sat there\]; the Buddha answered, "The shade of kinsmen surpasses that of outsiders." Hearing this, he turned his army back. Slanderous ministers spoke ill again, so he gathered his troops once more to go. Maudgalyāyana said to the Buddha, "I wish to hurl the army into another world." The Buddha said, "Can you take the past karma of the Śākyas and hurl it away?" He also wished to cover the city with an iron net, and wished to lift the city into the sky. The Buddha stopped him in each case, saying, "When karma ripens and retribution is received, it cannot be averted." At that time, the Śākyas shot at the king's army from a distance of one yojana; all their arrows struck the weapons without harming the soldiers' flesh. Viḍūḍabha was terrified, but a slanderous minister advised him, "The Śākyas observe the precepts and will certainly not kill people." The army arrived and besieged the city, and none dared go out. There was a young Śākya boy who alone manned the city wall, shooting many of the army so that countless died. Because of this, they scattered again. The Śākya clan called him down: "You are young of age; why do you bring disgrace to our clan? The sin of killing people is heavy; leave the country quickly!" Thereupon, four boys bowed in farewell and left the city. When other kingdoms heard of them, they raised them to be kings. The present king of Udyāna is their descendant. Viḍūḍabha gathered his forces again and ordered the gates opened. The troops entered, seized the Śākyas, buried them up to their feet, and had elephants trample them to death. He seized five hundred women to keep for himself; the women cursed and insulted him, so he cut off their hands and feet. Mahānāma entered the water, requesting that the Śākyas be released: "As long as I stay underwater, let them flee." Following his word, they were released, but blinded by karma, they returned inside. The king wondered why he had been in the water so long; searching for him, they found he had already died. The king repented and then stopped. In all, ninety-nine million nine hundred thousand people were killed, and the blood flowed like a river. Turning his army back to Śrāvastī, he also killed Prince Jeta; the Buddha prophesied that Jeta would be born in heaven. The Śākya women who had been harmed lay in a pit mindful of the Buddha; the Buddha immediately went there, the gods provided clothing and food, and he expounded the Dharma for them; all attained rebirth in heaven.
