> The Buddha and the fourfold assembly walked through the towns. There were two young boys playing in the sand who saw the Buddha's marks and signs. The elder offered roasted sand into the Buddha's alms-bowl, while the younger rejoiced and consequently made a vow to become a universal monarch under a single parasol and continue to make offerings to all Buddhas. The Buddha instructed Ānanda to place the sand on the Buddha's walkway, and accordingly bestowed a prophecy upon him. Later, he was indeed born as a prince named Aśoka ('Worry-free'). His body was very coarse and rough, and his father took no pleasure in seeing him. Yet he possessed great ambitions, dedicated exclusively to conquest. Where earth yielded weapons and armour, all whom he faced submitted. Reaching the sea-coast, when the king passed away, he inherited the throne. The devas anointed his head, and divine beings rejoiced. The narrative says: On the day he was first consecrated king, an iron wheel flew down, making him king of Jambudvīpa. For forty li above into the air and below into the earth, spirits and ghosts were his subjects. Later he showed terrifying severity, killing five hundred ministers and burning and killing many women, so that people called him Candāśoka ('Fierce Aśoka'). He appointed Wu-tuo as his prime minister, who was the one who had rejoiced in the offering of earth. He suggested to the king that an execution hall be established to kill people, so that none who entered could escape. The monk Merchant Leader preached the Dharma for the king; the king gave rise to faithful reverence, put an end to his previous prison deeds, and received the distant prophecy bestowed by the Buddha.
