> The Avadāna-sūtra says: In the palace, through the four requisites, he constantly provided for twenty thousand śramaṇas. There was a novice named Duanzheng, thirteen years of age, who manifested supernatural powers and devoured twenty thousand brāhmaṇas to make them accept the Buddha's transformation. The narrative says: The king asked the man of the Path, 'How can unprincipled killing and harm be eradicated?' He answered, 'Only by erecting stūpas, making offerings to the Saṃgha, pardoning the prisons, and aiding the destitute.' Furthermore, with spiritual power he covered the sunlight with his hand, creating eighty-four thousand beams of light, and wherever they shone, stūpas were erected. He then dismantled the seven great stūpas to take their relics, obtained precious caskets and ornamentation from the nāgas, and commanded spirits and ghosts to erect a stūpa in every place on this continent with one hundred million households. Thus, on the fifteenth day of the month at the time of a lunar eclipse, eighty-four thousand stūpas were simultaneously erected, and the multitude all rejoiced. After King Aśoka had erected the stūpas, he went to Kukkuṭārāma. Upagupta, leading his retinue, flew to the king's location from the country of Mathurā. Next, showing all the places where the Buddha had wandered, commemorative stūpas were erected in all of them. The stūpas of the great disciples were likewise venerated. Returning to the main palace, he burned incense and held a great convocation; immediately three hundred thousand monks assembled. Moreover, he moved Piṇḍola to raise his eyebrows with his hand and preach the Dharma for the king, \[saying,\] 'I dwell on Mount Gandhamādana, together with ten thousand arhats.' The king made offerings everywhere to the full amount of one hundred million pieces of gold. Even in old age, when the crown prince restricted his authority, he sent half an āmalaka fruit, crushed it into the soup, and distributed it among the Saṃgha; then his life came to an end. Later, down to the fourth generation, flattering ministers told the king, 'If you wish your fame and virtue to remain long in the world, you should destroy the stūpas.' He first went to Kukkuṭārāma. A stone lion roared; the king entered the city in fear, and then destroyed the monasteries and slaughtered the monks. Whoever obtained a śramaṇa's head was rewarded with a hundred pieces of gold. At that time, a man of the Path transformed himself into multiple heads to claim the reward and conceal the truth. The tooth-stūpa deity resented this, and a male-spirit pushed a mountain to crush the king and his army, so that none escaped death. The lineage of the Mauryas came to an end here.
