> The Saṃyuktāgama says: One hundred years after my parinirvāṇa, there will be Upagupta who will greatly perform Buddha-work. I entrust the True Dharma to humans and devas. The teaching of the Dharma will remain in the world for a thousand years without moving. Further, he told Śakra and the Four Heavenly Kings: 'Guard and protect the True Dharma.' After a thousand years have passed, unlawful phenomena will appear, with fierce winds, torrential rains, and numerous calamities. The kings of the four directions will slaughter monks and destroy stūpas and temples. In the remaining twelve years, the assemblies of monks will gather in the Middle Country. The king of Kauśāmbī will give birth to a son who will be difficult to withstand; his hands will appear smeared with blood and his body like armour. He will possess divine martial prowess, and his five hundred ministers will have identical appearances. One day, when it rains blood, he will succeed to the throne, conquer the four evil kings, fight and kill them all, and rule over Jambudvīpa. A Tripiṭaka monk will preach the Dharma for the king; \[the king\] will give rise to great faith and reverence, bestow fearlessness upon the Saṃgha, and provide various offerings for a full twelve years. Because \[the monks\] obtain profit and support, they will not cultivate the three karmas, but adorn their own bodies and depart from the monastic Dharma. Devas and nāgas will give rise to ill feelings and no longer protect them, shouting aloud: 'After seven days, the Buddha's Dharma will be extinguished.' When the day of reciting the precepts arrives, disputes will break out in the Saṃgha. Though there are hundreds of thousands of people, there will be only one arhat. The Tripiṭaka monk will not bear to hear the precepts, while the arhat will wish to hear them. The disciples will quarrel among themselves and subsequently slaughter one another until nearly all are wiped out. The devas and worldly people will mourn and wail. The great earth will shake in six ways, and everyone will disperse. When the king of Kauśāmbī hears of it, he will be filled with distress. People with wrong views will vie to destroy stūpas and shrines and harm monks. The Buddha's Dharma will be utterly desolate and extinguished all at once.
