Yet fearing that ordinary mortals and holy sages may be conflated, if we now examine the matter factually, it is impossible that eighty-four thousand were entirely holy monarchs. It can only be that the ten wheel-turning kings were the primary \[sages\], while the remaining descendants were ordinary mortals. As clarified in the Vinaya, it merely states that kings succeeded each other in order, whereas according to the sūtras, all are called holy monarchs. Surely this refers to the source as holy, while the downstream \[descendants\] are all subsumed under ordinary mortals. Furthermore, as in the case of the tenth wheel-turning king where it says there were one hundred wheel-turning kings, this would mean the Buddha's father and grandfather were both holy sages. Yet now it is only for the Bodhisattva that the scriptures show the manifest karmic effect of being a sage; the rest of the paternal clan were all ordinary kings.
