> From the foregoing investigation, when the universe first began, creation took shape and the imperial pole was initially established. Governing and binding all classes of beings originated with the Lord of the People (Mahāsaṃmata). Down to King Kalyāṇacintin, direct succession continued for thirty-three generations. Following this, ten dynasties flourished, all of which were holy kings and all called imperial stock. Those of the same descent line may follow direct succession, whereas different lineages might branch off. None did not receive Heaven's bright mandate to reign over the realm. Through long sources and distant successions, it is difficult to fathom thoroughly. Just as among the emperors of the two Han dynasties many were not direct heirs, and through the Wei, Jin, Song, and Qi successions occurred through collateral kin, so by applying this analogy to those cases, the principle is surely consistent.
