> Saṃghadeva, translated here as Zhongtian (“Heavenly Assembly”), or sometimes called Tihe due to phonetic corruption, originally had the surname Gautama and was a native of Kashmir. Entering the Way to cultivate learning, he sought out brilliant teachers from afar; he mastered the Tripiṭaka and was especially skilled in the \*Abhidharmahṛdaya\*, penetrating its subtle tenets. He constantly recited the \*Tridharmaka-śāstra\*, savoring it day and night and considering it the storehouse for entering the Way. In character he was handsome, clear, and possessing deep discernment, while his comportment was gentle and respectful; he dedicated himself to instructing others, conscientiously and untiringly. During the Jianyuan era of the Fu clan, he came into Chang'an to propagate the transformation of the Dharma.
