Later, when Fayun was lecturing on the Lotus Sūtra at Hualin Temple and reached the phrase 'suppose a black wind,' Zhi suddenly asked about the existence or non-existence of wind. Fayun replied: 'According to conventional truth it exists; in the ultimate truth it does not exist.' After three or four exchanges, Zhi smiled and said: 'If its nature is nominal existence, this too cannot be explained; it is difficult to explain.'
