> Shi Daoyan was a native of Xiaohuang in Yongqiu. From youth he possessed disciplined conduct. Skilled in the Vinaya, he meticulously studied the four branches and synthesized the various schools. Moreover, because the Vinaya collections were transmitted to the east with different pronunciations between Sanskrit and Chinese, and the texts were somewhat inconsistent, he feared that later generations would have nothing to consult. He therefore harmonized their main principles, entitling the work Treatise Determining the Correct Vinaya of the Four Divisions. Later he traveled to Pengcheng to propagate the Vinayapiṭaka, and ultimately passed away there at the age of seventy-five.
