> Shi Sengfu had the secular surname of Shan and was a native of Gaoyang. His father, Ba, was the magistrate of Lantian. Sengfu lost his father in his youth and lived in poverty, yet he was tireless in his dedication to study, collecting firewood for torches to illuminate his reading. By the time of his capping ceremony, he was fully conversant with the classics and histories. He possessed handsome features and was skilled in discourse. Later, he met Yang Yong, General of the Guard of the illegitimate Qin, who supplied him with clothes and provisions, and Xi Zuochi joined him in shared aspiration for study. When he heard Master Dao'an lecture on the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra, he developed a devotion to the path; thereupon he shaved his head and took instruction under Dao'an. After Dao'an passed away, Sengfu returned to Tingwei Temple in Weijun, lowered his blinds in contemplation, and severed all ties with worldly affairs.
