> Shi Sengyu had the secular surname of Zhou and was a native of Yuhang in Wuxing. He left household life at capping age, his practice pure and unmixed. In the fifteenth year of Yuanjia, together with his fellow students Tanwen, Huiguang, and others, he built a monastery on the southern ridge of Mount Lu, naming it Zhaoyin. Sengyu always believed that entanglement in the three evil destinies was due to emotion and bodily form; since emotion was nearly extinguished, the bodily form should also be discarded. Why should the footprints of Bhaiṣajyarāja alone be considered distant? Thereupon he repeatedly made spoken vows and first resolved to burn his body.
