> However, sacred teachings differ, and allowances and prohibitions vary. If it is a great skillful means undertaken for the sake of beings, moving in accord with the times, the benefits manifested are myriad, beyond the control of ordinary regulations. Thus the sūtra states: 'One who can burn a single finger of the hand or foot surpasses the dāna of kingdoms and cities.' Yet for ordinary monks who have entered the monastic life, their original purpose is to guide beings through dignities and deportment. Now, if they mutilate their bodily husks and destroy the marks of a field of merit, examining this in debate, there are both gains and losses. The gain lies in forgetting the body; the loss lies in transgressing the precepts. Thus Nāgārjuna said: 'Bodhisattvas of new practice cannot simultaneously perform all the perfections in full. Some fulfill dāna yet run contrary to filial piety, such as the prince throwing himself to the tigress; some fulfill wisdom yet run contrary to compassion, such as scrutinizing others to the point of cutting off their food.' These are all because their practice is not yet completely consummate, not without excess and deficiency.
