> Shi Faxiang, whose lay surname was Liang, was a person of unknown origins. He always dwelt in the mountains practicing austerities, reciting over one hundred thousand words of sūtras. Birds and beasts gathered around him, all as tame as domestic fowl. At the shrine on Mount Tai there was a large stone casket storing treasures. Once, while traveling through the mountains, Faxiang stayed overnight beside the temple. Suddenly he saw a man in black robes and a military cap, who ordered Faxiang to open the casket, and having spoken, vanished. The casket's stone lid weighed over a thousand jun. Faxiang tried lifting it, and it floated up lightly; he then took the wealth and distributed it to the poor. Later he crossed south of the Yangtze River and stayed at Yuecheng Temple. Suddenly he began wandering about licentiously, behaving like an actor and jester, or sometimes going naked, affronting court nobles. Sima Tian, General Who Guards the North of the Jin, detested his lack of restraint, invited him, and poisoned his drink. Faxiang repeatedly drained three cups, yet his demeanor was serene and calm, untroubled and undisturbed; Tian marveled greatly at him. He died toward the end of the Yuanxing reign period of the Jin, at the age of eighty.
