> Shi Fazong was a native of Linhai. In his youth he was fond of hunting. Once in Shan he shot a pregnant deer, causing her to miscarry; the mother deer, holding the arrow in her mouth, still fell to the ground to lick her fawn. Fazong then repented and realized that clinging to life and loving one's offspring is shared by all sentient beings. Thereupon he broke his bow and snapped his arrows, leaving household life to pursue the Path. He always sustained himself through piṇḍapāta, observed the practice of eating only one meal a day, and endured bitter greens throughout the six periods of the day to repent of his past transgressions. He recited the Lotus and Vimalakīrti sūtras. He often climbed up to a terrace to chant, and the sound could be heard far in all directions. Over three thousand gentry and commoners received the refuges and precepts from him, and he subsequently expanded his dwelling into a monastery. Taking his recitation as its name, it was called "Lotus Terrace." His end is not known.
